Note from your publisher March has arrived with a truly impressive slate of local events, offering everything from high-stakes drama and world-class music to quiet moments in nature. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in the immersive visuals of a planetarium concert, explore the powerful stories told on our local stages, or simply enjoy a Saturday morning at a maple sugar bush, there is a wealth of talent and tradition to tap into this weekend.
It’s a wonderful time to get out and support the artists, educators, and organizations that make our area so vibrant. Last weekend, I took in Geva Theatre's current production, Barefoot in the Park,
which is playing on their Wilson Stage through March 29. Barefoot in the Park was a 1960s staple: The original Broadway run opened on October 23, 1963 at the Biltmore Theatre and didn't close until June 25, 1967. By the time it took its final bow, it had played 1,530 performances, and it became known as a thematic predecessor to
sitcoms of the '60s and '70s. A 2026 audience necessarily relates to the production differently than audiences did 50 years ago, but in the hands of director Rachel Alderman and a stellar cast, it remains a hilariously sharp study in what happens when romantic ideals meet the reality of shared life. I was particularly struck by the nostalgic set design and how our own perspectives on the characters have evolved over the decades; we experience it as a warm, nostalgic time capsule. It is a
fantastic night of theater for our Beyond The Nest community—click here for my review that shows how this 'show about nothing' still has plenty to say in 2026. And click here for tickets. —Debra Ross,

March 6-14, 2026 at MuCCC: In Anton Chekhovʼs timeless masterpiece The Cherry Orchard, an aristocratic family returns to their beloved estate only to watch it slip away as debts mount and the estate is sold out from under them. At once funny and heartbreaking, the play captures a world on the brink of change, as the beautiful cherry orchard is cut down and a fading old order gives way to a brash new one. Directed by Mark Cuddy.
